Even the most beautiful person in the world can make you do a double take if they open their mouth to reveal a bad smile. One of the first things people notice is your teeth – for better or for worse. Everyone knows that they have to brush twice a day and visit the dentist twice a year at least to keep their teeth in tiptop shape. But there are some things that you may be doing that could damage your teeth.
Whether it is the eating the wrong foods or skipping some necessary tooth maintenance, these are some bad habits that could compromise your bright white smile.
1. Sucking your thumb
Normally a bad childhood habit that is thought only to be off-putting, thumb sucking can actually cause your teeth to become misaligned. The misalignment of teeth could cause issues chewing and breathing down the road. If your child is a chronic thumb sucker, take steps to wean them off the bad habit.
When life gives you lemons, it may also give you bad teeth. Lemons are extremely acidic, so sucking on lemons or drinking lemon water too often will cause the enamel of your teeth to erode. The surface of your teeth will become increasingly rough and look unbecoming. Cut back on consumption of raw lemon if you want to avoid dental problems.
3. Brushing too hard
Sometimes, your teeth feel so dirty that you feel like you need to scrub with all your might to get them clean again. Well, that it mostly mental and brushing too hard can actually lead to some dental problems. You can wear down your enamel by brushing too hard, irritate your gums, and even increase your likelihood of cavities. Brush thoroughly and often, but don’t brush too hard. You can get just as good of a cleaning by being gentle. You can even get a brush with softer bristles to help prevent damage from over brushing.
4. Biting the wrong things
People will often use their teeth to break through a difficult wrapper, open a tight bottle cap, or untie a frustrating knot. This is never good for your teeth – they are meant for chewing and talking, not as a replacement for your toolbox. YOU can easily crack a tooth by trying to bite something that is too hard. Think twice before using your teeth as a tool.
5. Nail biting
A nervous habit of many, nail biting can be very bad for your teeth. Those who consistently bite their finger nails can cause your teeth to misalign and even break a tooth and harm enamel. While many bite their nails as a nervous habit, it is not worth messing up your mouth.
There are many ways you can mess up your teeth, but most bad teeth habits are very avoidable. Take a second to think before you act and you’ll be able to keep that pearly white smile for a long time.
