While reading has been used for decades as an effective tool for winding down at the end of the night and falling asleep, recent studies show that using an e-reader may have the opposite effect. According to recent information, the light omitted from an e-reader disrupts your body from creating melatonin, which is omitted by your brain to tell your body that it’s time to go to sleep. By learning more about the effect e-readers have on sleep, you can prevent your device from causing you many sleepless nights.

E-readers effect on sleep

E-readers are convenient, as they offer you with the ability to have any book at your fingertips, and millions of people around the world have switched from paperbacks to e-books. However, a recent study done at Harvard stated that when the tablet omits light while using it to read before bed, it works to stop your brain from creating the hormone melatonin.

If you’ve ever been told not to watch television before bed because it will keep you up at night, e-readers deliver on that same concept. According to the study, people who use e-readers before bed had a harder time falling asleep, didn’t sleep as soundly during the night, and woke up the next day feeling less refreshed, when compared to a regular book.

Using an e-book doesn’t only have a negative impact right before bed, but using it several hours before bed can have the same negative effect. Even if you feel sleepy and lay down with the e-reader in hand, you can often loose this feeling, as any melatonin that was created will go away once the light is omitted from the e-reader.

The importance of melatonin

Melatonin is one of the most important hormones in your body when it comes to sleep. When you do not have enough melatonin, you’ll not only have a hard time falling asleep, but your body will not have the deep sleep that it needs. People who don’t have enough melatonin will often have broken up sleep, and that’s why it’s suggested that you don’t engage in any stimulating activity, or activity that causes you the melatonin to decrease, you’ll experience issues with both onset on sleep and duration.

Some people experience issues with melatonin production naturally, and can help the issue by supplementing with over-the-counter melatonin, however this isn’t recommended when melatonin is disrupted due to your nightly routine.

While e-readers that omit light are known to cause a disruption is sleeping patterns, the good news is that the e-readers on the market that work without any light production have surfaces that reflect similar to paper books, and do not cause any adverse reactions on sleep.
