Naturally Brighten Your Smile

What is the first thing you notice about people when you initially meet them? For most, it is their smile. A great smile makes for a great first impression. So it is no wonder that throngs of people flock to drugstores to get teeth whitening products. But after hearing about the potential side effects of artificial teeth whiteners, that pearly white smile may quickly turn to a frown.

Those with sensitive teeth could experience some discomfort when whitening their teeth. Additionally, soft tissue irritation could happen if the gum tissue comes in contact with the whitening solution during the whitening process. Those who whiten their teeth too much may start to have their teeth appear gray or translucent rather than the desired creamy white color.

Teeth whitening can also get expensive too. There are some easy, natural ways to get teeth whiter. Check out the tips below to work toward whiter teeth without having to go for pricy whitening procedures.

Find the cause: The first step to getting whiter teeth is to determine why they are discolored. People who smoke or are heavy coffee drinkers tend to have stained teeth. Other food and drink that may stain teeth include tomato sauce, wine, and sports drinks. And while some food and drinks stain teeth, there are others, such as soda and fruit drinks, which break down the white enamel to reveal the yellow dentin underneath. Quitting smoking or your coffee habit may not be easy, but it could be the first step to getting whiter teeth.

Fruits and Veggies: Crunchy vegetables such as celery and carrots and crispy fruit like apples are naturally abrasive, so they will help scrub the stains off of tooth enamel without harming any teeth. They also produce saliva, which helps prevent stains on your teeth.

Baking soda: Mixing baking soda with lemon juice into a paste is a great way to remove stains since the abrasive particles polish teeth and the chemical properties help lighten stains. Make sure to mix it well enough with the lemon juice though, as the grittiness of baking soda can actually scrub off enamel if you aren’t careful.

Cheese, please: Any excuse to eat cheese is a good one, and the teeth whitening properties of cheese is as good a reason as any. The milk protein and calcium in cheese helps make enamel stronger, keeping that white outer layer from fading and revealing the yellow dentin. A small amount of cheese after a meal can help prevent decay and re-mineralize enamel.

Strawberries: The delicious fruit is already known for its help in lowering the risk of cardiovascular disease, but it turns out strawberries can help whiten teeth as well. You want to mash the strawberries up into a paste and rub them on your teeth. Vitamin C helps reduce plaque and malic acid in the berries aids in reducing stains. Let the paste sit on your teeth for a while and then be sure to rinse thoroughly.

A perfect smile is easier to attain that many think. Your smile will be the first thing anyone notices about you – so make it a good one!
