Turmeric is a trendy spice these days, and for good reason. It is a multi-purpose seasoning with wide-ranging healing powers and health benefits. The main active compound in turmeric is called “curcumin,” and you may see supplements called either turmeric or curcumin.

This golden spice blends nicely with many other spices, such as ginger and cinnamon. It’s both possible and delicious to combine it with either a savory, or sweet spice mix.

Ayurvedic medicine — a holistic healing system from India — has used turmeric for thousands of years. Research is still being conducted into the anti-cancer, anti-fungal, anti-inflammatory, and anti-aging properties of this spice. Health benefits of turmeric:

  1. Cancer prevention: In countries where high amounts of turmeric are incorporated into a regular diet, there is a lower incidence of some types of cancer. The active ingredient in turmeric, curcumin, may prevent precancerous cells from developing into cancer.

  2. Fighting inflammation: Many modern-day diseases, such as heart disease, are at least a partial result of chronic inflammation. The curcumin in turmeric helps against inflammation.

  3. Warding off arthritis: Given its powerful anti-inflammatory properties, curcumin can be as or more effective than regular prescription drugs in treating arthritis or any other inflammation of the joints.

  4. Anti-aging properties: The curcumin in turmeric is rich in antioxidants, which acts as a defense against aging free radicals. On top of this, it stimulates production of antioxidants within our bodies.

  5. Safeguarding brain health: Low levels of a brain hormone (called brain-derived neurotrophic factor), which is linked to brain disorders and certain psychological imbalances, can be elevated by curcumin.

  1. Turmeric chai: Although it may seem like a far cry from its traditional use in curries, turmeric lends itself to soothing drinks that the whole family can enjoy. A basic recipe for the tea is to simmer a teaspoon of turmeric with three cups of water for ten minutes. You can experiment with other spices such as cinnamon or ginger to add more taste and added health benefits.

  2. Enhance other flavors: As turmeric has a mild taste, you can add it to many dishes, sauces, and smoothies. It compliments spices such as ginger, garlic, cinnamon and black pepper. Your creativity is the limit. Start first with a pinch and adjust to your taste.

  3. Golden honey: Add a tablespoon of turmeric to 100 grams of raw honey and mix thoroughly. This has an antibiotic effect, which can be used to offset colds and flu.

  4. Spice up soups: Half a teaspoon of turmeric can enliven most soup recipes, giving a lovely color and hint of flavor.

  5. Healing facial: You can use turmeric to make a wonderful facial that can help heal acne and eczema. Mix a teaspoon of turmeric with two tablespoons of chickpea or oat flour, and yogurt. Spread on your face and relax for twenty minutes before washing off.
