Not many people realize it, but copper is actually one of the most essential minerals for the human body to run at full capacity. Pretty much every cell in the body uses copper in one way or another to function, so it is vital to people from the moment they are born all the way up through their golden years.

The reason copper is so essential is that it helps the body make red blood cells along with keeping nerve cells and the immune system healthy. On top of all that, copper even helps form collagen, which is a part of bones and connective tissue.

While copper deficiency is not too common, those with the low copper totals can easily help improve their condition. Some signs and symptoms of copper deficiency include anemia, joint pain, irregular heartbeat, thyroid problems, and a weakened immune system.

As copper is not naturally produced by the human body, it is essential for people to get their necessary intake from outside sources. The main way to do this is through a balanced diet – you can get your copper from food, drink, and even some special dietary supplements. Nutritionists recommend a daily intake of 1.2 mg of copper for adults and 0.5–1 mg for children. Here are some great ways to get your necessary dose of copper.

Diet: The best and easiest way for most people to get copper in their system is through their diet.  Many types of seafood, such as oysters, lobster, squid, crab and mussels are very good sources of copper. Additionally, nuts and legumes such as cashews, pecans, almonds, and peanuts are also are great things to snack on to get copper. Fruits and vegetables like kale, bananas, grapes, avocados, sweet potatoes, tomatoes, and mushrooms are another source of copper.

Multivitamins: Many multivitamins that include minerals also contain copper. In addition, patients can get an oral supplement to provide them with the necessary copper.

Gel: Copper is also available in a topical gel or a topical solution. This method is not as common as the others, so it would be best to talk to a doctor to see if it is right for you.

As such a key mineral to the human body, you don’t want to take any chance with your diet. Be sure you eat a steady and balanced diet to get all of copper you need. It may not be flashiest of minerals, but without copper your body wouldn’t work. All it takes is a little attention and you’ll have all the copper you need to stay healthy.
